While trying not to be overly facetious of a very serious situation, I’m just imagining dozens of people whose package trackers just reported, “Delivered: Atlantic Ocean.”

Yeah, no, not like other cities. I mean, we have our share of crime, but there’s literally maybe one place I’d tell my wife not to go late at night, and it’s not anywhere near like a literal no-go zone.

This sucks - Peter Frampton is being forced into retirement by a degenerative muscle disease.

About eight years ago, Peter Frampton started to notice that his ankles felt a little tight in the morning. He initially dismissed it as one of the many pains that comes with getting older, but as time passed, his legs began feeling weak as well. He tried to ignore the signs that something was wrong until four years ago when a fan kicked a beach ball onto the stage at one of his concerts and he fell over when he tried to kick it back. “My legs just gave out,” he says. “We all joked, ‘He’s fallen and he can’t get up.’ But I was embarrassed.”

Two weeks after the beach ball incident, he tripped over a guitar cord on his stage and collapsed again. He was also noticing that his arms were getting so weak that loading heavy objects onto the overhead compartments of planes was becoming extremely difficult. When his tour had some time off, he finally booked an appointment with a neurologist to see what was happening. He was diagnosed with the inflammatory muscle disease Inclusion-Body Myositis (IBM) and sent to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland where he was teamed up with Dr. Lisa Christopher-Stine, the director of their myositis clinic.

Frampton is donating a dollar from every ticket sold to a foundation he started that will research a cure.

Shame it’s happening to Frampton, as he is genuinely one of the nicest ‘rock stars’ out there.

Message that a co-worker of mine wrote that started getting passed around at school yesterday, re: statement that Don Jr. made about teachers:

I’ve been subconsciously pondering Jr. calling teachers “losers.” It didn’t really bother me. My wife is a teacher. I’m a teacher. My mother in law. Lots of my friends. Some of my former students. People who inspired me, challenged me, made me better. I’m not worried about what anyone says about teachers.

But I have pondered it. And this thought that I’ve had tonight, after a long week of 14 hour days teaching and then supervising my theater students as they put on a show they’ve poured their lives into for 6 weeks. This thought, I think, might be a clever one.

Teachers are losers. Teachers lose a lot. They lose their financial stability, spending their money on things their students need, from food to coats to pencils to books to lesson plans. They lose their long term financial security as people steal their pensions. They lose moments with their own children as they work long hours during the week and grade papers on weekends and worry about their students who have it worse. They lose moments with their friends and loved ones because on Fridays they are too tired to even decide what to have for dinner, much less to get up to anything. They lose their ability to talk to people who aren’t teachers about their kids because when they say “their kids” they speak interchangeably about the biological ones and the ones they teach and the ones they taught 10 years ago. They lose their self respect because all of the messages from the outside are about how they are responsible for so many ills and they rarely hear any encouragement. They lose their rights to personal safety because if a student hits them or bites them it could be that nothing will be done to that student. And because if a nutjob decides he wants to be famous for killing a bunch of people, everyone expects them to throw themselves at a bullet.

Sometimes they lose their passion because they feel like no one appreciates everything they do, adapting to the winds of every new program adopted by people who left the classroom because it was too much work.

Teachers are losers. They lose all kinds of things. They lose themselves so that the children in their charge can find themselves, their abilities, their self-efficacy, their capabilities, their passion, their future, and their past.

I’m a loser. And I’m proud of it.

Feh. Those GPU’s are on a very Dell/Alienware-unique MXM(ish) module so you’re going to be paying through the nose for any possible upgrade and the 9000-series core i’s are extremely powerhungry hotheads. To run anywhere near what you see in most desktop benchmarks those 9900K’s actually approach something like 200W power usage *before* overclocking. In a laptop, with another 150-ish W GPU next to it, that’s going to sound less like a Dell product than something from Pratt&Whitney and it’s still going to throttle like hell.
…And it’ll be ruinously expensive to upgrade.
…And it’s not as if Intel is likely to make anything faster for this socket than you can already get for it anymore, anyway.

It’s a gimmick, it’s eyewateringly pricey, it’s not going to perform all that well compared to the max-q (slightly slower but also very energy - and thus thermally - efficiently tuned) GPU with a CPU optimised for high-performance laptops next to it.
These things are going to drop like flies from overheating (Alienware has a spotty history in that regard to begin with) and they’re not even going to perform all that well compared to a more sensible product.

If you get an Alienware, just get the m15 or m17. This abomination will end in tears.

Interesting points, and the other thing that you might be bordering on is that we’re approaching the limit at which quantum physics is telling us we need to stop. Efficiency isn’t going to get a whole lot better from here, and jamming high-power components next to each other is just not a happy path to success.

We’re a good couple of process nodes away from that yet, it’s just that Intel F^&%’ed up the node they should have had in production a year or two ago at the latest now and they’ve essentially been running their 14nm++++++ (or so) node on overdrive and are essentially selling you pre-overclocked hothead CPU’s to pretend they still have some edge over AMD on desktop offerings.
…Which is kind of weird since so far, their actually sensible laptop products (8950HK if you desperately want to part with a big chunk of your hard-earned) still perform quite well, mostly because AMD’s line scales wonderfully from mid-end desktop to high-end server but has a bit of a powerhungry backbone for laptop usage (in short, the idle power consumption is just… bad, kind of, so you’re likely going to be stuck with bad battery life on anything AMD puts out over the next few years - that infinity fabric kind of slurps your batteries dry).

It’s kind of disappointing since what NV is doing with those max-q GPU’s is almost magical. I mean, I don’t think I’ll ever pay the premium for laptop gaming, ever, but performance isn’t that far removed from desktop levels any more. If you just get something more sensible you’ll be off a couple thousand bucks cheaper and it’s just absolutely amazing how close you can get to a pretty high-end gaming desktop with something that fits in a <6lb. weight budget. This monstrosity just shouldn’t exist, other than as a way to make gamers with more money than sense part with the former.

I’m old enough to remember when 64k was enough ram. It’s an interesting experiment, and even if it works, for most people, it’s the equivalent of buying a laptop when all they need is a chromebook.

A few interesting byproducts. The first is that they actually cared about being able to do upgrades. Having to undo the keyboard and, gawd for bid, the monitor to replace hardware needs to go away. The second is that a cooling system that can handle an i9 and a 2080 will be great for other laptops. And three, this will reduce the amount of discarded hardware if something fails.

Problem with that last bit is that generally, what fails on a laptop logic board is something in VRM or associated power circuitry (or the flex cable to the display backlight blows out and the logic board turns out to be insufficiently fused to not melt down right along with it). An MXM GPU has that power circuitry (largely) offloaded to the main logic board as well. From my time moonlighting in electronics repair I strongly suspect most actual failure modes for this thing will still hit the not (economically viably) replaceable bit. And it’s still Alienware/Dell so the only way you’re ever getting any replacement parts for that sort of thing for less than $1000 is if it gets replaced under an extremely expensive service agreement.
Don’t get me wrong, I would dearly love for you to be right but we’ve been promised modular laptops for the better part of two decades now and absolutely nobody has even come close to making good on that promise even a tiny bit.

Not birds. Not icing. Not engine failure. Not weather. Not explosive decompression. That leaves four major possibilities.

Suicide by plane by one of the crew (German Wings in Europe, Hughes Air West by a disgruntled employee/passenger who shot the cockpit crew).

Bomb in the cargo hold (unlikely, because as far as I know, Amazon hasn’t started selling bombs on-line yet).

Fuel pump still running in the empty center wing tank (TWA over Long Island Sound). Boeing has said this issue has been addressed, but you never know. Chaos theory may be valid.

Runaway trim on the elevator.

I’m hoping it’s #4.

Approach is when you use your trim switches the most. You want a nice smooth ride to insert yourself into the landing queue. Bush has 3 E/W runways, and you never know to which one you will be assigned until you are about where they were when things went to hell. Could be 27, 26 left, or 26 right. And trim switches do stick sometimes. If they fail full down you are in a world of hurt.

Amazingly, if you offer 11% of the US population a great movie starring people of their own particular ethnic background, they will flock to the theaters to see it. Even more amazing, people who are not in that 11% demographic will *also* go see the movie. You can’t explain that.

In today’s chapter of academic program mismanagement, today I learned that no one in the university bothered to tell the sophomores that they needed to buy textbooks for the course THAT BEGINS TOMORROW. So, we have had to scan the first unit of the book to share with the 475 students taking the class, hoping that they will have the books by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, last week I learned that we would start the term missing two teachers. The last week has been an effing nightmare trying to get those classes covered.

I really hate being a manager.

Here’s a bit more Brexit news:

The government is expected next week to spell out its plan to mitigate a potential £9bn food-price shock from a no-deal Brexit, as analysts predict the cost of staples such as beef, cheddar cheese and tomatoes could soar.

With just over a month until the Brexit deadline, the Department for International Trade is expected on Monday to publish a list of new import taxes, or tariffs, that will apply to 5,200 products, including food and clothing, should the UK crash out of the EU without a deal.

The relationship with the EU is key to the price of food because nearly one third of the food eaten in the UK comes from the bloc. At this time of year the situation is more acute because, with UK produce out of season, 90% of lettuces, 80% of tomatoes and 70% of soft fruit is sourced from, or via, the EU.

“Food and drink tariff rates will be higher than those in any other supply chain,” says Richard Lim, chief executive of consultancy firm Retail Economics. “All stages within the food supply chain will experience increased costs, with retailers hit disproportionately as processed goods attract higher duties than raw materials and semi-processed goods.”

In the USA, Trump says steel and coal are coming back, and American manufacturing will spontaneously resume. And his followers believe it.

But most of those factories were mothballed years ago, or sold off. American firms restructured their supply lines to accommodate offshore factories and suppliers. They can’t suddenly switch to USA-only with the flick of Trump’s teeny tiny pinky finger, even if they wanted to.

And they don’t.

It’s not simply his legal problems, the clock’s ticking on his term and he needs some sort of big and flashy “win” to argue that his way of doing things gets results. He’s tried to be a “wartime president” and found that Russia just kept eating his lunch. His efforts to convince voters he’s doing anything meaningful about immigration have been a wash. And his trade war is threatening the one thing he had going for him, which was an economy that’s in the green. Not to mention that back in the Good Old Days, the U.K. had a global Empire as a “sphere of interest” to provide both sources and destinations for trade and investment on a major scale. And that those captive markets are now gone (replaced, in large part by just that “economic and trade cooperative” the Brits are now deliberately bailing on) - the economy of the rest of the world having moved on.

The Brexiteers pitched their campaign (at least AFAICT) on the notion of “restoring” Britain to Its “rightful” status as it was in (a highly-romanticized version of) the past. Unfortunately, it seems like that past isn’t going to be the one of the globe-girdling superpower of the pre-WWII era, but England as it was in the mid-Sixteenth Century: a second-tier offshore player with limited resources and consumed with internal conflicts.

But at least they’ll be rid of the Poles and Romanians, so the hardships will be worth it…

For example, during the 2016 referendum campaign, the Leavers were fond of using talking points that came from the authors of the WTO strategy of Brexit (“Economists for Brexit”, who were widely quoted by the Leave campaign partly because the number of economists actually advocating for Brexit was laughably small) and Economists for Brexit quietly admitted that Brexit would in fact lead to the extinction of manufacturing in the UK - but the Leave campaign didn’t mention that part of the argument.

And just another reminder that Trump probably actually DOES view his Presidency as a sort of reality-TV production ( though lacking the “script”, “director” and “editor” parts).
Ratings and brand-promotion are the main - if not the only - priority.

That pretty well defines his whole life… Lied to get on Forbes list, leverages himself to make it look like he’s something he’s not, every aspect of his pathetic life is horse shit and all for show.

What’s really pathetic is that he likely believes it. He’s mentally unstable.

He’s notably sub 50% in several states he won last time. That’s not a guarantee but it doesn’t bode well for him. TBH I just think the odds are against us having four consecutie two term Presidents and I think people are tired of him more or less. Doesn’t mean we don’t slack off on the candidate. Kansas interestingly though did elect a Dem governor and a Dem representative. We’re not going to win Kansas but the right candidate and campaign could make it at least a little competitive. Missouri to me seems to be a state growing more and more red with time. It was once a classic swing state but I’d argue it hasn’t been that way since 2000.

Amazingly, if you offer 11% of the US population a great movie starring people of their own particular ethnic background, they will flock to the theaters to see it. Even more amazing, people who are not in that 11% demographic will *also* go see the movie. You can’t explain that.

It’s not like there are other kids who have worn Bernie or whatever gear for lefty candidates who have been allowed. One of them was bellyaching Engle v Vitale and whining about how Dems are why we don’t have prayer in school. My buddy pointed out that the Engle decision only bans forced prayer. It’s also worth nothing that it was a 8-1 decision and 3/4 of the Republican appointed SCOTUS members agreed that forced prayer was unconstitutional. It’s just stuff like that. Easy to look up history that they get repeatedly wrong. I don’t know how Professor Kruse deals with Dinesh D’Sousa’s stupidity without tearing his hair out.

Yeah I heard that. English history from 1150-1650 or so fascinates me. The modern royals bore me but their bloodthirsty ancestors are fascinating.

Speaking of me toos, guess who shows up in the book about Jeffrey Epstein (Filthy Rich)? None other than Les Wexner—appears he had Epstein help him with some financial entanglements. Oh, and the creepy thing (so far) was Epstein handled his pre-nups, but Les and Abigail signed theirs separately; and Epstein brought some model/babe to Les’s signing and had him sign on the woman’s stomach. Ewwwwwww.

None of this surprises me. Wexner has been a living question mark his whole life.

What’s really infuriating is that it took a Hollywood movie to reveal the contribution of African-American women to NASA. Without that film and its success, the facility would never have been renamed in her honor. Meanwhile generations of women — both black and white — grew up without realizing that women played a real role in the early days of the space program. Yes — there was a book — but Americans don’t read serious literature.

Belafon  Feb 24, 2019 • 11:25:36am

The United States has a collective action problem. Not just the most obvious one, of high-ranking members of the Donald Trump administration persistently failing to act while in office and then publishing I-told-you-so memoirs or sniggering onstage at public fora about the president’s unfitness. No, the problem is also at the most micro level, and at sweeping constitutional levels as well. The prevailing ethos seems to be that so long as there is somebody else out there who is capable of Doing Something, the rest of us are free to desist. And for the most part, the person deemed to be Doing Something is Robert Mueller.

Given reports that the Mueller investigation might come to a close any day now, we may soon find ourselves in the middle of the acid test of this proposition. There’s a lingering perception that once Mueller delivers his report, the Trump era will end in a cloud of white smoke and glitter. It’s a nice fantasy—the one in which Mueller, armed with Truth and Fact, finishes off the Trump presidency with a ride through the Capitol on a white unicorn, scattering indictments and the seeds of impeachment, in a conclusive and irrefutable wrapup of the two-year probe.

It is also profoundly unlikely to actually happen that way. As one observer after another has reminded us, this is not necessarily Mueller’s call, and it’s not necessarily Mueller’s mandate. It’s also, perhaps most importantly, not necessarily Mueller’s style. At every turn, Mueller has shown us who he is, and that would be the antithesis of the Trump-style reality show protagonist. He’s been almost impossible to spot and is decidedly uninterested in the spotlight. Whenever he has faced the choice between grandstanding and dutiful drudgery, he’s opted for the latter. His public filings tend to be understated. His signature appears on only a few…

If any one man singlehandedly undermines the Great Man theory of American history, it might by definition be the guy who wants no attention, credit, fortune, or fame from this gig. He may also be the only powerful person in Washington, D.C., who has no plans to parlay his government service into a cable news perch, a cookbook, or to launch a line of handbags. It would not surprise me if Mueller did the Muellerist move of all time, which would be to drop a minimalist report on Bill Barr and then ghost…

We want Mueller to be both the guy who knows everything and the guy who does everything. It obviates anyone else from needing to know what we already know and do what needs doing. But going into the next few fateful days, my sense is that we might want to stop investing too much hope in great men, and superheroes, and saviors. Instead, we should remember that it is our job to insist that we, and our public officials, must be the Muellers we hope to see in the world.

Interesting:

Randy DeBaillie pointed to the power meter on his snow-covered farm: Even on a foggy, monochromatic day, with the sun barely piercing the clouds, the flat black panels planted nearby in two long rows were generating electricity.

“There’s enough energy produced to run the whole complex,” said DeBaillie, 50, who farms 6,500 acres with his brother and cousin. They typically grow corn and soybeans each spring, but this year they want to put more solar panels on 15 acres — and sell the energy.

The earnings, he said, would be about three times what an average harvest would yield there.

Across the flatlands of Illinois, a new crop is rising among the traditional waves of grain as farmers increasingly make the same calculation as DeBaillie. Hundreds have applied to host acres of solar panels on their property, a move encouraged by a state law requiring that renewable resources provide 25 percent of Illinois power by 2025.

The shift is controversial, and not just because of how it could alter the pastoral landscape. Taking some of the most fertile soil in the world out of production could have serious consequences for a booming population…

In the northwest corner of Illinois, where his great-grandfather emigrated from Belgium during World War I, four generations of DeBaillies have worked the land. Randy DeBaillie built the half-dozen red sheds that serve as the headquarters for the family business. On a bitterly cold winter morning, they were surrounded by deep snow drifts. A thick sheet of ice blanketed the driveway. He stepped out anyway, wearing knee-high rubber boots and worn tan coveralls, to get to his solar panels.

If too much snow piles up on the panels, they cannot function properly. So he’ll grab a squeegee and clear it off…

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi. Because, with Kennedy gone, they’re hoping to have the Supreme Court reverse their old decision. It’s also why abortion laws are getting so extreme.

The only time Republicans do the right thing is if it affects a family member or a friend that they care about. It’s beyond their capacity to be concerned about those they do not know.

Kind of like Rob Portman, right?

He was vehemently opposed to gay marriage. It was the most appalling idea ever in the history of humanity. It would destroy civilization.

Until his son came out as gay. And said “dad, someday I’d like to fall in love and marry and build a future and a family with my beloved.”

Suddenly, Portman realized that gay marriage was okay after all.

(The conservative view of all issues: “If it’s not my problem, it’s not a problem.”)

I jumped all over Portman for that one. Still remind him of it too.

I asked why couldn’t he think of the other fathers and mothers, they have children that come out to them, and they want them to have equal treatment.

After all, it is his job to consider his constituents that don’t give him huge campaign contributions.

Portman is a wimp. I think he is one of the most lightweight senators going. And in some ways that makes him dangerous.

That’s exactly my point. I’m glad this Rep loves his daughter and I’m glad Portman loves his son but there are millions of other sons and daughters they would have made second class citizens. This is the right I’m a nutshell. Empathy isn’t their thing at all.

Was Cheney ever concerned about the culture wars? Wasn’t his focus always on foreign policy (maybe economic policy as a secondary issue)?
